The Many Advantages of Epoxy Flooring Over Leaving The Concrete As-Is
Whether you are in charge of a warehouse or are simply interested getting your small garage floor covered, you have a choice: get it layered with an epoxy floor coating or leave the concrete as it is. We understand the interest in leaving it as is; once the concrete dries you’re completely done. But if that’s what you do, you’ll miss out on a huge amount of advantages an epoxy coating can give you. Let’s take a look.
STAINS & SPILLS
Concrete is porous, which means that anything you spill on it tends to soak in. That’s no problem when it’s water, or even beer (which makes your garage smell kinda good for a while!). But oil will most certainly stain your concrete, and anything else you spill — weed killer, bug spray, antifreeze — could make your space more toxic and keep the fumes around long after you thought you’d clean up the mess, staining it in the process. It gets even worse with…
CRACKS
Most concrete garage and warehouse floors are going to crack. In fact, most of them have stress lines put in them so that they have a place to crack as they expand and contract. That’s good at protecting the rest of the concrete floor, but bad when you spill something that gets down in there and lingers. It also creates a place that insects love to hide.
Instead of leaving these spaces, why not get an epoxy floor covering instead? This will seal up those cracks so that a simple rag is all it takes to clean up the spills for good. It’s also easy to mop up any spills, certainly easier than it would be to mop a concrete floor.
LOOKS
Can we all just admit that epoxy garage floor coatings look amazing? What used to be just your garage can now be used as an extension of your house. Just unfold some lawn chairs and your garage is now a porch. With chip floors, you can make a simple coating look more like a floor you’d see at an airport, department store, or celebrity garage.
If you spend a fair amount of time in your garage, why not make it look as good as possible? You’re certainly going to notice, as is anyone who stops by.
DURABILITY
We’ve all dropped something on our garage floors and chipped it at one time or another. For some of us it was a hammer, for others it was a motor thanks to a faulty engine hoist. (It was certainly faulty, it definitely wasn’t user error.) And while we’re not claiming that epoxy can stand up to every dropped motor, it’s going to hold up better than plain concrete. A small chip in a floor coating is also going to be less noticeable than one out of concrete, considering the way that epoxy flakes tend to fool the eye into hiding chips.
NON-SLIP
While a non-slip grip might be a good idea on concrete steps, most concrete that is used in garage floors and warehouses don’t use it because it’s going to wear off too quickly. While the grip might work for a while, the very fact that it’s preventing slipping means that it’s creating friction and wearing away, leaving a smooth surface. That not what you want when you want to prevent slips and falls.
That’s where non-slip grips in epoxy flooring comes in. This grip is one that sticks around, whether you’re talking about preventing people from slipping or for making sure your car’s tires aren’t spinning out.
LIGHTING
Here’s one that no one ever thinks about, but it can actually turn out to be quite an advantage. Epoxy flooring can be quite reflective, which not only makes it look cool but can also increase the visibility in your garage or warehouse. You won’t have to install as many lights overhead because the light will be reflected instead of being absorbed by the dull concrete. This can also be useful when you’re working in the garage, whether you’re changing the oil or working with wood. Reflections give you a better view of what you’re doing, making light more even from below as well as from above.
